What deer can see & the effectiveness of cover scents

Eye see you

Howdy friend!

Picture this: you’re sitting in your stand, last day of the hunt waiting for that one buck you’ve been after all season.

You just know he’ll show today.

Hours go by, you’re tired and doing the woodpecker trying just to stay awake when all of a sudden, you hear some steps in the leaves.

There he is!

He’s coming in and almost gets to the point of no return where you’ll take him, but he stops.

His head rises, his nose points to the air….he’s seemingly looking right at you.

You’re frozen, daring not to move even a millimeter.

Suddenly he snorts.

He’s turns and is gone in a flash!

UGH, all the emotions immediately flow through you, disappointment, dejection, anger, frustration, sadness.

What the heck happened?

Well in this episode of the Feed Bandit Podcast we focus on how deer see and smell, and what that means for hunters.

Did you know….deer detect motion, blue/UV-bright clothing, and low-light glow, but have poor detail and depth perception, so stillness and non-blue camo are key.

Also interestingly enough, K9-based tests show that scent-control routines (showers, special detergents, rubber boots, carbon clothing) do little to stop a nose on the downwind side; deer can detect human odor hundreds of yards away.

However, cover scents (pine, earth, acorn, skunk) can delay detection slightly, possibly long enough for a shot.

Wind awareness remains the most critical factor.

This Deer Foundations series is intended to be useful for deer hunters of all ages and experience but it will be especially helpful to those that are just starting out.

It will give those new hunters all the basic fundamentals needed to be successful out in the field so we hope you’ll take a listen and let a less experienced hunter know about it.
