Understanding and reading deer rubs

Texas First Outdoors

Howdy friend!

Soothing

How many times have you planted a new pecan, fruit or any other tree and a day or two later you’ve found the trunk to have been destroyed by a deer.

That’ll learn ya to always wrap it with some wire or something to keep those pesky bucks away!

So why are bucks in the business of mauling some trees and not others?

In this episode of the Feed Bandit Podcast we discuss the six types of rubs: boundary, trail, rut, community, field, and giant rubs and we find out what each one means.

Hint: noticing a pattern in rubs can help you identify a buck’s territory, travel routes, rutting behavior, high-traffic spots and even the age of the buck.

We also learn how bucks exhibit predictable rub behaviors, including species preference, specific tree sizes, terrain choices, unique antler marks, and rub height—all of which help pattern individual deer.

Why is learning about this important?

Well we’re all about gaining an edge here and analyzing rubs helps us determine a buck’s habits, movement, and size.

Knowing this can enable us to choose the best place for stand placement or stalking thereby giving us a higher success rate.

Understanding these targeted signposts is just another tool in our hunting utility belt.

This Deer Foundations series is intended to be useful for deer hunters of all ages and experience but it will be especially helpful to those that are just starting out.

It will give those new hunters all the basic fundamentals needed to be successful out in the field so we hope you’ll take a listen and let a less experienced hunter know about it.
