How to read deer poo

Texas First Outdoors

Howdy friend!

What was it eating?

I, for one, have just casually noticed that a deer had been there by noticing a pile of it’s poo.

What I didn’t realize was that by really examining that pile you could learn so much about the animal that left it.

In this episode of the Feed Bandit Podcast we discuss how deer scat is a treasure trove, so to speak, of hunting intelligence.

For example, fresh, moist pellets indicate recent deer activity (within 6-12 hours) and signal a prime hunting spot.

Large pellets (¾" or longer) suggest a mature buck may be nearby.

Dry, light-colored pellets are older and less actionable.

Soft pellets indicate a diet of fruit or moist greenery, while firm pellets suggest browsing on twigs and brush.

The more you know….

Also, where you find that pile of deer pellets also indicates that you may have stumbled upon some magical intel.

Pellets in dense cover hint at bedding areas while those in open areas suggest feeding zones.

Scat size and moisture offer clues about deer size, age, and recency of movement, aiding in stand placement and timing.

Using this intel may help you set up and ambush your next meal.

This Deer Foundations series is intended to be useful for deer hunters of all ages and experience but it will be especially helpful to those that are just starting out.

It will give those new hunters all the basic fundamentals needed to be successful out in the field so we hope you’ll take a listen and let a less experienced hunter know about it.
